According to Oxford English Dictionary, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) means:
“A non-profit organization that operates independently of any government, typically one whose purpose is to address a social or political issue.”
INGO is a diverse, active, fast-growing civic force in the current international society. Its importance is steadily growing. The development and contribution of Taiwanese CSOs are gradually being noticed and gaining recognition in international society.
Participating in international affairs and developing diplomatic soft power through NGOs is a policy of steadfast diplomacy promoted by President Tsai Ing-wen and a form of contribution from Taiwan to the international society.
The INGO Center in Wufeng District, Taichung was founded based on this idea. Through all kinds of exchanges and training of national and international NGOs, NGOs in fields including democracy and human rights, disaster relief and humanitarian aid, sustainable development, public health and medical care, and social welfare are being drawn to Taichung. As a result, Taichung has become an important cluster for Asia-Pacific NGO workers. A stable, long-term partnership is built to help domestic NGOs enter the international society, and draw the international society closer to Taiwan, which therefore becomes an important member of international society.
